It's an interesting tag (at least I found her responses interesting ! ); I tried to use it to answer the questions people often ask me (like "why do you always draw sad kids ?" and "why don't you color digitally ?", lol ). It was not so easy, because I usually don't think about it that much. But I'm in a self-questioning time, so it was just the right moment ! XD

10 things about my « art » :

1/ I never took art courses or anything that kind (I think it’s pretty obvious). The few technical notions that I have, I learnt them thanks to pieces of advice I got on ~Mangastyl forum [link] , here on dA, or thanks to some irl friends who also draw, and in the few books I have read. I’d enjoy to have an art course one day, though.

2/ The most important for me is that a piece is expressive, conveys some emotion; a very realistic piece without any emotion would be less interesting for me than a piece that is not perfect technically but that makes me feel something. So that’s what I try to do with my drawings.
_{2/ Le plus important pour moi est qu’une œuvre soit expressive, qu’elle transmette une émotion ; une œuvre très réaliste mais vide d’émotion serait pour moi moins intéressante qu’une œuvre moins parfaite techniquement mais qui provoque une réaction en moi. 3/ As I said, I don’t have a lot of technique; and sometimes it frustrates me, because I would need more technique to express better what I want to. It’s like when you want to talk and don’t know the language well enough. So, I try to improve, and I’m rarely satisfied with my drawings.
_{3/ Comme je disais, je n’ai pas beaucoup de technique ; et parfois, ça me frustre, parce que j’aurai besoin d’une meilleure technique pour pouvoir mieux exprimer ce que je veux. C’est comme quand on essaye de dire quelque chose dans une langue qu’on ne maîtrise pas. Donc, j’essaye de progresser, et je suis rarement satisfaite de mes dessins.}

4/ I like drawing “ traditionally “ because I like to “touch” what I do. For me it’s really fun to experience with various media, to try a way and another to use them, etc. I like the textured feeling traditional art has, too. For me it would be too boring to use a computer program to color my drawings, and I’m too lazy to learn how to use those complicated programs anyway. Maybe I’ll try it one day, but at the time I don’t really feel like it.
_{4/ J’aime dessiner avec des moyens « traditionnels » parce que j’aime « toucher ce que je fais ». Je trouve ça marrant d’expérimenter avec différents outils, d’essayer différentes façons de les utiliser, etc. J’aime le côté « texturé » des œuvres trad, aussi. Je trouverais trop ennuyeux de m’asseoir devant mon ordi pour faire une colo, et je suis trop paresseuse pour apprendre à utiliser ces logiciels compliqués de toute façon ! J’explorerai peut être cette voie malgré tout un jour, mais pour le moment ça ne m’attire pas vraiment.}

5/ Sometimes I use art to express the way I feel, but not always, or sometimes only in a indirect way. So please don’t get worried because I draw a sad character; I’m not necessary depressed. Also, if I draw a kid smoking or someone taking drugs doesn’t mean that I do, or that I think it’s a good thing. It sounds obvious but people often react this way.
_{5/ Ca m’arrive d’utiliser le dessin pour exprimer mes sentiments propres, mais pas toujours, ou parfois seulement de façon détournée. Donc s’il vous plaît, ne vous inquiétez pas trop quand je dessine un perso triste, je ne suis pas forcément déprimée moi-même. Pareil, si je dessine un gamin en train de fumer ou quelqu’un qui se drogue, ça ne veut pas dire que je fume/me drogue, ou que je pense que c’est une bonne chose. Ca peut paraître évident mais les gens souvent interprètent ce que je fais trop au pied de la lettre.}

6/ I like to draw kids, because they’re expressive and touching, to my mind. I think they’re not so “ happy and innocent” people often think, so I don’t always draw them all pink and sweet, smiling happily. Childhood is full of happiness and dreams, but also of fears –don’t you remember it ? The fantastic is quite mixed up with the reality, there are fairies but also monsters hiding in the dark… That’s why childhood is a subject I like to depict.
_{6/ J’aime dessiner les enfants, parce qu’ils sont très expressifs et que je trouve qu’ils ont un côté touchant. Je ne pense pas qu’ils soient aussi « joyeux et innocents » que certains ont l’air de le croire, alors je ne les représente pas toujours façon « rose bonbon » avec des couleurs pastel et un grand sourire. L’enfance est pleine de joies et de rêves, mais aussi de peurs – je suis souvent surprise que les gens occultent parfois complètement cet aspect. Le fantastique se mêle à la réalité, il y a des fées mais aussi des monstres tapis dans l’ombre…Je crois que c’est pour ça que j’aime représenter l’enfance.}

7/ I know my style is quite “naive” and not very detailed. It’s partly a choice. I admire very much the artists who are able to convey a lot of things with a very simple drawing. Even if sometimes I’m a bit sick of my “childish” style.
_{7/ Je sais que mon style est assez « naïf » et peu détaillé. C’est partiellement un choix. J’admire beaucoup les artistes qui peuvent faire passer beaucoup de choses avec un dessin très simple. Même si parfois j’en ai un peu marre de mon style « enfantin ».}

8/ In a general way, the part I most like in a drawing is when I comes to coloring. It’s not always the case –lately I’m rarely satisfied enough with a drawing to color it. But most of the time, I like to “make the picture alive” with the colors. It helps me ton enhance the atmosphere, and as I said in 4/, I enjoy experimenting various media. I like to try to find the technique and colors that suits the best to the picture.
_{8/ En général, le moment que je préfère lorsque je dessine c’est la mise en couleur. Ce n’est pas toujours le cas –ces derniers temps, j’aime rarement assez mes dessins pour arriver à l’étape des couleurs. Mais la plupart du temps, j’aime « donner vie à l’image » avec les couleurs. Ca m’aide à accentuer une atmosphère, et comme je disais au numéro 4, j’aime expérimenter différents supports. J’aime chercher la technique la plus adaptée à chaque image…}

9/ Most often, when I do a drawing I have a little story about the characters in my head. I think about their personality, and what might have just happened to them, and try to express it in their attitudes. I don’t always do that consciously, though. So I enjoy to see how people interpret the picture when it’s done.
_{9/ Le plus souvent, quand je fais un dessin, j’ai en tête une petite histoire à propos des personnages. Je prends en compte leur personnalité, et la situation dans laquelle ils se trouvent, et j’essaye de l’exprimer à travers leurs attitudes. Je ne le fais pas forcément de façon franchement consciente et calculée, par contre. Donc c’est marrant de voir comment les gens interprètent l’image une fois qu’elle est finie.}

10/ Pfiew, it’s hard to find 10 things to say ! Well, I would say that in general I draw to have fun, or to make gifts to the people I like. I don’t plan to become a professional artist or anything that kind. So I’m sometimes a bit lazy. Sometimes people tell me things I should improve in my drawings (like working on the backgrounds, or on some anatomy points), and I know they’re right, but I don’t necessary do it if I’m not motivated. But one day, if I feel the need to, I’ll work on it, maybe even quite intensively. Anyway, if one day I realize that “art” brings me more dissatisfaction than fun, I’d very seriously consider stopping it.
_{10/ Pfiouh, pas facile de trouver 10 trucs à dire ! Bon, j’ajouterais qu’en général, je dessine pour le plaisir, ou pour faire plaisir à ceux que j’aime. Je n’ai aucunement l’intention de passer pro ou quoique ce soit du genre (heureusement pour moi, ce serait mal barré XD). Donc parfois je suis un peu paresseuse ! Par exemple, les gens me font remarquer des choses qu’il faudrait que j’améliore dans mes dessins (comme les décors, ou certains points d’anatomie), et je sais qu’ils ont raison, mais je ne le fais pas forcément si je ne suis pas motivée. Et puis un jour, si j’en ressens le besoin, je vais essayer de m’améliorer sur ces points, parfois de façon assez intensive. De toute façon, si un jour je m’aperçois que le dessin m’apport plus d’insatisfaction que de plaisir, je songerai très sérieusement à arrêter.}

OK, so to celebrate my 5000 pageviews, I'm making a little contest...

the subject is to represent at least one of the 3 characters from my "Spooky" project :
Spooky, Mandragora, or Brutus.

Spooky

Spooky is a kind little character. He's in love with Mandragora, but she totally ignores him. So he's a bit melancholic sometimes. He's very clumsy also, so he often gets into trouble...

Mandragora

Mandragora is quite arrogant and cares about her appearance...she's not at all interested in Spooky, actually she almost doesn't notice him...

Brutus

Brutus is Mandragora's dog. Despite his appearance, she considers him as a cute little doggie who only wants to play. Brutus' favorite games are : biting Spooky, trying to eat Spooky, pursuing Spooky...

Spooky and Mandragora are some small creatures living in an old cemetery. They're kind of immortal (I mean, it's no matter if they die ).

what you have to do to enter the contest
Represent one or more of these characters. It can be a drawing, a comic, or anything else you have in mind (flash animation, sculpture, plushie, photomanipulation, or whatever as long as YOU did it XD).
>You can include other characters if you wish, as long as there is at least one of my characters that is easily recognizable.
>It's no matter if your style is very different from mine !
>I'd prefer that you stick to the personnality of the characters. Now, if you have another idea and want to try it, it's ok ! ^^
>Remember it's all about black humour, so don't make it too serious ! It can be cute !
